Character Crush – King Smith of The Follow

CHARACTER CRUSH – Because Authors Have Crushes Too!

This week’s Character Crush comes from Author Eliza David featuring soulful musician King Smith from her latest work, The Follow.  Check out King and all his musical vibes!

Love + light,

How did you create your hero King Smith?

I’d been sitting on a plot bunny about a housewife/PTA president-type who had a secret addiction to porn/cybersex.  I just turned that character into an award-winning R&B singer/guitarist named King Smith.

Attractive young African American male playing posing.

If King was deserted on an island, what would he take with him?

His iPod packed with every Marvin Gaye album ever recorded, a bottle of Hennessy, a couple of ounces of weed, and his guitar Mercy.

What has been the biggest conflict in King’s life?

Coming to terms with his sex addiction is King’s main hurdle. In The Follow, we watch King’s life ebb and flow as he tries to face facts about himself.

What makes King sexy?

Mmmm…well, that voice of his is a fantastic start. Second, King has a graciousness about him that’s admirable.  Even though he’s sold millions of records and has had sex with hundreds of women, King still displays the manners his mama raised him to have.

What challenges did King have growing up?

King’s father was a gangster, raising one of his many sons in Harlem. After he was incarcerated for money laundering in the mid-Nineties, young King was alone with his mother.  She worked hard as a nurse to send him downtown for guitar lessons every Saturday morning.  That weekly instruction spawned the beginning of King’s future success as a musician.

Use the first three words that pop into your mind to describe King.

Rugged, sensual, raw
